My baby’s new vocabulary:

Allahu Akbar = AWWAH ABOTT ! (Normally said with a raised voice and an exclamation mark at the end!)

Meen, Heem, Deen, EEN, QEEM, and finally Aaaaa meen!= the endings to surah Fatiha and his favorite point is  when we say “wala dhaleen” he responds “Aaaameeeeeen!” Alternatively he follows Surah Nas and waits for the endings to shout triumphantly NAS! NAS! NAS!

Bismillah: mumbles something that ends with YAH!

Carry me= Doh (Said in a whiny voice with his hands raised : Don’t ask how that translates or the logic behind it)

Candy= TANDYYYYYYYYYY! (normally shrieks for it: I am really trying to still win this battle but its’ going downhill faster and faster)

Tuta!= Shuta= Fart (Kind of gross, but my baby likes to announce when he farts or point out gleefully when an adult farts around him)

I Wow you: I love you

I Mee you: I miss you

Peasssssshhh? : Please

NOOOO! : unmistakeable.

MINE! and ME! : both clear as well.

The good news is he doesn’t say his name is “davi” anymore when asked; he insists actually “AYAAN!” In answer to anything else. When I ask “Are you a baby?” he responds “NO! AYAAN!” or “Is your name *insert random name here*?” He responds in an assertive voice “NO! AYAAN!”

His favorite number is 2, since he can count up to two (and unconsciously up to four.) He insists anything I give him has to be TWO!  (And yes I do split the cookies in half, thankfully he doesn’t understand fractions yet!) And now that he just turned two, he loves answering to “How old are you?” with a gleeful “TWO!” (Holding up an index finger from each hand.)

When you ask him “Sufyan how are you doing?” He nods his head sagely and says “goot!”

Recently he got tired after a long evening out, it was his bedtime and we were still in the car. He began saying in a tragic toddler voice “NO Bye!” “NO Ta ta!” then sniffed “Ayaan! OME!” (Home) and why does he always refer to himself in third person? We had to keep up a chatter to convince him we were almost there.

When I reprimand for doing something “bad” he will go lie down on a cold hard floor and pout his tiny little heart out.

His sense of the tragic is so overwhelming to him that he will throw a toy across the room and cry in frustration because it won’t fit into the little jar he was trying to cram it in. No explanation of size and volume will console him.

He also says “Goot norning!” (good morning) and “Goot Neet” (good night.)

We have progressed from us reading to him stories at night, to him sitting with his books and amicably chattering away about “Pita Peen” (Peter Pan) and “Wenny” (Wendy) and their adventures. Which suits me perfectly as I can squeeze in some of my own readings at that point. When he is not sleepy, he will have you go through book after book mercilessly until your jaw is tired and you secretly begin to hate those perfectly innocent characters and begin wishing they would just die and end the story (okay not so dramatic now.)

Anyway, just a small sliver of Ayaan’s adventures till next time…Peace and beautiful sunny days your way   :)

MashaAllah, i love it when they first start talking it’s so cute. about the bedtime stories, i limit it to 2 - that’s the rule: each one chooses a story. In the bedtime routine i use this to make sure things go smoothly. if they start to misbehave i warn them that if they do that again they won’t get to choose a bedtime story, it always works.
