Salamaat,
For those of you in the DC area, or familiar with Muslim activists here, I just received an email that Sr. Maryam Funches died. She is a Muslim activist extraordinaire Mashaallah.
Sr. Maryam is long time Muslim Leader, Activist, and Volunteer.
She was a leader in the Muslim Inter-Community Network and
many efforts for Social Services and helping those in need.
She was the Mother of Br. Hud Williams(Former ADAMS Youth Director)
I am in shock. Only six days ago, she emailed me for a collaborative project to work on a grant proposal. I wrote back, and hadn’t heard anything, so I just assumed she was busy (with her usual host of causes).
May God accept all her efforts, may He forgive her shortcomings and elevate her soul to the highest Heaven (amin).
May He grant strength and patience to her loved ones.
The time we have is so short, these reminders are very sobering for me. May we, those following close behind, make the most of these precious moments we have (amin).

Ameen. I couldn’t believe it when I got that email and then another sister passed away this week and we may have to fight to be able to wash her body and give her a proper janaza.

Asalamu alaykum,
The janaza for Maryam will be at ICM at 10am on Sunday in sha Allah. Tonight after isha the imam gave a very moving speech about her and how she dedicated her life to helping others and brought so much joy into so many lives.
Another sister from VA passed away this week. She was Muslim and at least one of her children is Muslim. I’d rather not go into too many details here but there is a dispute in the family over how to bury her.
Her daughter wants to bury her as a Muslim so we need sisters to help wash her body tomorrow. I volunteered to help and am working on getting some other sisters involved.

It is only now that I am able to fully accept Allah’s (SWA) will that it was time for my beloved sister to return to Him. Surely from Allah (SWA) we come and to Him we shall return. Sister Maryam gave my family shelter in her home when my Christian family allienated me becasue I had accepted Islam. She wrapped her arms and resources around us and yes, kept me busy with her many projects in the community. Only Allah (SWA) will know the many families she helped. We loved her in the community and know her many projects with Muslim Intercommunity Network, but she made so many personal sacrifices for Allah’s Sake.
May Allah raise her to the highest heights in the heavens. Ameen
